Typically, tear performance is used to assess the durability of textiles, such as resin-treated cotton and wool chemical fabrics.

What is an Elmendorf Tear Test?


The Elmendorf tear tester measures material resistance to tearing. It is used to conduct fabric tear strength tests. It measures the tear strength of fabrics. It achieves this using the pendulum tear method. The pendulum falls from a certain height. It converts all potential energy into kinetic energy and cuts the fabric. Then, it measures the force required to tear the fabric to a certain length. This force indicates the difficulty of tearing the fabric.

How do You Calibrate the Elmendorf Tear Tester?


The calibration of the device is performed by measuring the test weight and calibration weight.

There are four calibration weights and four test weights. For the calibration process, we start with the lightest weight. We attach the calibration weight to the test weight and then select the test weight on the device.

Press the start buttons on both sides of the table below the device to release the pendulum. The values read are compared with the table values to verify if they are within the correct range.

If the device's calibration is within the correct range, it indicates that the device is in good condition. We repeat the same process for weight B and make adjustments on the device's screen.

We compare the value read on the screen with the table value. Now, we select C and check D on the screen. During the test, the weight increases from A to D. This means the force also increases.

Therefore, the harder the fabric is to tear, the greater the resistance, and the heavier the test weight. Finally, we select weight B on the device and re-read the value. After completing the calibration process, you can begin testing the sample.
